How to Check the Status of Your SSDI or SSI Claim

Waiting for a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) decision can be stressful when your financial stability depends on the outcome. After you apply, the Social Security Administration (SSA) may need time to review your work history, income, medical records, and other claim details.

The good news is that the SSA gives you several ways to check the status of your claim so you can stay informed and respond quickly if they need more information.

How Long Does It Usually Take to Process a Claim?

Processing times vary from one claim to another. The SSA may need several months to make an initial decision based on the medical evidence, the type of benefits you’ve requested, and whether the agency needs more information. If you’re missing vital records, your doctors don’t respond quickly, or your application requires additional review, your claim may take longer to process. Appeals and reconsiderations are subject to similar potential delays.

Check Your Claim Status Online, by Phone, or in Person

You can check the status of your SSDI or SSI claim in several ways. Which option is best for you may depend on your specific needs and preferences:

  • Online – In many situations, the easiest way to check on your claim is through your my Social Security account. After you log in, you should be able to see whether your application is still under review, whether the SSA has made a decision, or whether the agency needs more information from you.
  • By Phone – You can also call the Social Security Administration directly to ask where your claim stands. A representative may be able to explain whether the agency is missing crucial documents, whether another office is reviewing your application, or whether you should have received a notice already.
  • In Person – Some situations may feel easier to manage in person. In this case, contact or visit your local Social Security office. This may be helpful if you received a notice you don’t understand or need to submit updated information. If you prefer in-person interactions in general, that’s a good enough reason to schedule a face-to-face appointment.

Alternatively, if you’re working on a claim with help from a disability attorney, they can check the status of your claim and help you understand your next steps.

What Information Do You Need to Check on Your Claim?

Before checking your SSDI or SSI claim status, gather your Social Security number, date of birth, and contact information. You may also need your application date, claim number, and any notices you’ve received from the SSA. If someone’s helping with your claim, be sure you have their contact information as well.

How to Interpret Your Claim Status and What to Do Next

The SSA may use a variety of terms to communicate an applicant’s claim status. For example, your claim status may show that the agency is reviewing your application, requesting more information, making a medical decision, or sending a final notice. If it says the agency has reached a decision, wait for a written notice before assuming the outcome, since the online update may not explain the reason. If your claim is delayed, check whether the SSA needs more information from you. Respond to requests as soon as possible. If your claim was denied, review the notice carefully and act before the appeal deadline expires.
